Cogs & Gears: A Steampunk Inspiration

Hi everyone!  I'm Monica of HeartcraftPaper and I want to thank you for visiting with me today.  I have a special card that was truly inspired when I was searching through the Dies R Us shop and found these cogs and gear dies from the Scrap Man.  I totally thought Steampunk.  With that in mind I set out to find an image that would fit this perfectly.

Supplies:

Sharpie: Gold
Copic Markers
Prismacolor Pencils
Double Sided Foam Tape
Gold Doily
Neenah Solar White Cardstock
Black Velvet Paper
Small mulberry roses:  3 red, 3 white
Image: Guard of Suits by StarStampz

Begin by coloring in my image.  I used a combination of marker and pencils to give this image more depth.

Skin:  E000, E11. E13, E04, PC1081
Ruffle Skirt: C3, PC1059, PC1054, PC1056
Under Bustle & Bows: R29, R89, RV99, PC937, PC935
Bustle: E32, E35, E15, PC1082
Top: E13, E15, E09 PC944, E27, E29, PC947, E32, E35 PC1082
Buttons/Buckles: PC935
Boots/Hat: E27, E29, PC947, PC950, R29, W1
Flower: PC950, PC1082, PC1033
Hair: Y11, Y26, PC1034, PC1033, PC1082
Staff: Y11, Y08, YR23, PC1033

For the image support use Distress ink to blend in some color.  Leave areas white, other darker and others looking like a rust.  Cut out one of each of the dies and use a metallic marker to add in splashes of gold here and there.

Because Steampunk is usually browns and blacks use a black velvet paper to add some depth to the craft.  Cut white cardstock and the black velvet to A2 size and die cut using the Lawn Fawn Fancy Scalloped Rectangle Stackables.

Using a paper cutter or a pair of scissors I cut my image into a rectangle leaving about 1/2" from the image (top, bottom, left right).  This made the image a slim rectangle.

Glue down the die cuts to the black velvet using liquid glue.  First place the Time Machine die cut askew on the lower left corner.  Then place The Gear Border on the right side of the card.  Cut off any part of the cogs that hand over the edge.

Next, using the gold doily, place it in the upper left hand corner.  Cut off any part that hangs over the edge.  I did not use the die to cut the whole thing out since the idea is to give it more of a rustic look.  Using scissors, cut the doily down around the scallops, scrape across the doily to destress it and pierce it where the holes are on the base.

Using double sided foam tape adhere the whole thing onto an A2 card base.

Using a pair of scissors, destress the edges of the image so that it has more of a tattered look to it.  Using Distress Ink (Vintage Photo) or a brown ink, blend around the edges of the image to add to the distressed look.

Using double sided foam tape, adhere the image to the left side of the card about 1/2" from the left side.  This will allow the gears and cogs to appear from being the image.

Use the same distress ink to add some brown edges to the white flowers and adhere the flowers to opposite corners as depicted below.  Bunch in 2 white 1 red upper, 2 red 1 white lower.

Here you have the finished product.
